Custom fields let you keep your own details on every customer record, for example a subscription plan, a renewal date or a VIP flag. They sit alongside the fields every customer already has.
Time: about 2 minutes
Before you start
- Only an Owner, Admin or Supervisor can add, edit or delete custom fields. Viewers can look at the list. The Agent role can't open Custom fields.
- Custom fields belong to customers (contacts). The Conversation tab says "Conversation fields aren't available yet", so you can't add fields to a single conversation today.
Add a custom field
- Go to Settings → Custom fields.
- Click Add field.
- In Field name, type a name, for example "Subscription plan". Below it, Mevrik shows the key it will store the field under ("Will be stored as").
- Under Type, choose what the field holds (see the table below).
- Tick Required if anyone editing a customer must fill it in before saving.
- Click Create field. You'll see "Field created".
Field types
| Type | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Text | Any words, such as a company name or a note. |
| Number | Digits only, so it can be compared and summed. |
| Boolean | Yes or no. |
| Date | A single calendar day. |
| List | One of a set of choices. |
The console warns that you can't define the choices for a List field yet: "the value is stored as free text until that lands." Until then, use Text if you want to be clear about what the field holds.
Default fields
At the top of the page, under Default, you'll see the fields every customer has: Name, Email, Phone, External ID, Tags and Added. They show a lock because you can't rename, retype or delete them. Email and Phone carry a PII label, because they are personal information.
Edit or delete a field
Hover over a field's row (or tab to it) to see the pencil and bin buttons. On a phone they are always visible.
- Edit: click the pencil. You can rename the field, change its type, or change whether it is Required. The key stays as it is. If you change the type of a field that already holds values, the console warns that "existing entries" can become "unreadable" and values are not converted.
- Delete: click the bin, then Delete. The field is removed for good, and "Existing contact values for this field will be lost." You'll see "Field deleted".
Use Search fields… to find a field by name or key.
Troubleshooting
"A field with this name already exists. Try a different name." Two names can end up with the same key, for example "VIP Tier" and "vip_tier". Choose a different name.
"The key can't be changed after a field is created." Create a new field with the name you want, then delete the old one.
"Failed to save field" or "Failed to delete field" Try again. If it keeps failing, refresh the page and try again in a few minutes.
"Couldn't load custom fields." Retry Click Retry, or refresh the page.
The Add field button is greyed out. Your role can't create fields. See Team and roles.
